Eco Cleaning for Airbnb Turnovers: A Sunshine Coast Host's Guide

Short-term rental turnovers on the Sunshine Coast happen fast. A guest checks out at 10am, the next one arrives at 2pm, and in that four-hour window you need a property that looks and smells like nobody’s ever stayed there.

Most hosts default to industrial-strength cleaning products because they’re fast and they smell “clean.” But that chemical smell can actually work against you. Guests increasingly mention chemical odours in reviews, and for properties marketed as coastal retreats, the scent of bleach doesn’t match the brand.

We’ve been handling Airbnb turnovers across Noosa, Maroochydore, and Mooloolaba for several years now. Here’s how we’ve built an eco-friendly turnover process that’s just as fast and gets better guest feedback than conventional cleaning.

Why Eco Products Make Sense for Short-Term Rentals

Beyond the environmental benefits, there are practical reasons to switch.

Guest sensitivity. You don’t know who’s staying in your property. Guests with asthma, chemical sensitivities, or young children react to residual cleaning chemicals on surfaces, pillows, and bathroom fixtures. Plant-based products leave fewer irritants behind.

Surface longevity. Harsh chemicals degrade grout, strip sealant from stone benchtops, and fade timber finishes faster. The salt air on the Sunshine Coast already accelerates wear on coastal properties. Using gentler products extends the life of your fixtures and fittings.

Marketing advantage. “Eco-friendly cleaning” is a genuine selling point for Sunshine Coast listings. Many guests choosing the coast over city stays are environmentally conscious. Mentioning eco cleaning in your listing description can influence booking decisions.

The Four-Hour Eco Turnover Process

Here’s the system we use for a standard two-bedroom Airbnb turnover. Adjust timing for larger properties.

Kitchen (45 minutes)

Start with the kitchen because products need dwell time on greasy surfaces.

Spray benchtops and stovetop with a citrus-based degreaser. While that sits, clear and wipe the fridge interior with a bicarb and water solution (one tablespoon per litre). This neutralises odours without leaving a chemical taste that transfers to the next guest’s food.

Clean the oven if needed using a paste of bicarb soda and water applied to cooled surfaces. For regular maintenance between deep cleans, a vinegar spray on warm oven walls works well.

Wipe down all appliances, handles, and light switches with a plant-based multi-surface spray. Finish with the sink — a sprinkle of bicarb, a scrub, and a vinegar rinse leaves stainless steel bright without chemical residue.

Bathrooms (45 minutes)

Sunshine Coast bathrooms fight a constant battle against humidity and mould. For turnovers, focus on:

Shower screens: White vinegar in a spray bottle cuts soap scum effectively. For stubborn buildup, apply neat vinegar, leave for 10 minutes, then scrub with a microfibre cloth. This works better than most commercial shower cleaners on glass screens.

Toilets: A plant-based toilet cleaner with tea tree oil provides genuine antibacterial action. Apply under the rim, scrub with a toilet brush, and let it sit while you clean other surfaces.

Grout: The enemy of every Sunshine Coast bathroom. A paste of bicarb soda applied with an old toothbrush, left for 15 minutes, then scrubbed and rinsed keeps grout white between professional deep cleans. In high-humidity areas like Coolum Beach and Noosa, this needs doing at every second or third turnover.

Mirrors and chrome: A 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle with a microfibre cloth gives a streak-free finish on mirrors and tap fittings.

Bedrooms (30 minutes per room)

Strip beds completely and remake with fresh linen. For laundry, use a plant-based detergent and add white vinegar to the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener. Vinegar softens fabric and removes detergent residue without artificial fragrance.

Dust all surfaces with a damp microfibre cloth. Vacuum floors thoroughly, paying attention to under beds and behind curtains where sand accumulates in coastal properties.

Living Areas and Final Walkthrough (30 minutes)

Vacuum and mop hard floors with a plant-based floor cleaner. For timber floors common in Sunshine Coast properties, avoid excess water — a well-wrung mop is essential.

Wipe remote controls, door handles, and light switches. Fluff cushions, straighten decor, and check that all lights work.

Open windows for 15-20 minutes during the clean to air the property. Fresh coastal air is the best scent for a Sunshine Coast rental — no artificial diffusers needed.

Stocking Your Eco Cleaning Kit

For a standard turnover kit, you need:

  • Citrus-based multi-surface spray
  • Plant-based bathroom cleaner with tea tree oil
  • White vinegar (buy in bulk — 5L containers)
  • Bicarb soda
  • Plant-based dishwashing liquid
  • Plant-based laundry detergent
  • Microfibre cloths (colour-coded: blue for bathrooms, green for kitchen, yellow for general)
  • A good vacuum with a HEPA filter

The initial investment is comparable to conventional products, and buying concentrates in bulk from local suppliers in Maroochydore or Caloundra brings the per-clean cost down.

Guest Reviews Tell the Story

Since switching to eco products for our turnover clients, we’ve seen a measurable increase in cleaning-related positive comments in guest reviews. Comments about the property feeling “fresh” rather than “clean” come up regularly. That distinction matters — fresh suggests a well-maintained home, while clean sometimes implies the previous guest left a mess.

For Sunshine Coast hosts competing in a crowded market, every detail in your reviews counts. Eco cleaning is one of those details that guests notice and appreciate.
