Autumn Cleaning Checklist for Sunshine Coast Homes
March is settling in and the Sunshine Coast is making that familiar shift from humid summer days to the drier, cooler patterns of autumn. It’s not as dramatic as seasons changing in Melbourne or Hobart, but the differences still affect how your home needs to be maintained.
We clean hundreds of Sunshine Coast properties every week, and we see the same seasonal issues come up year after year. Here’s what deserves attention as we move into autumn.
The Summer Aftermath
Summer on the Sunshine Coast is tough on homes. Humidity drives mould growth. Salt spray coats windows and outdoor surfaces. Afternoon storms wash mud and debris under eaves and into drainage channels. Insects find their way into every gap.
Before settling into autumn routines, it’s worth doing a thorough post-summer reset.
Bathrooms and wet areas. Check behind toilets, around shower bases, and along bathroom window frames for mould growth. Summer humidity creates perfect conditions for black mould, particularly in bathrooms that don’t have exhaust fans running long enough after showers.
A solution of one part white vinegar to one part water works well for surface mould. For more established growth, a paste of bicarb soda applied to the affected area for 15 minutes before scrubbing is effective without harsh chemicals. The Queensland Health guidelines on mould management recommend addressing the moisture source, not just cleaning the mould itself.
Ceiling fans and air conditioner filters. These work overtime during summer. Fan blades accumulate a surprising amount of dust and grime—particularly the top surfaces you can’t see from below. A damp microfibre cloth gets the worst off. Air conditioner filters should be removed and washed or replaced; a clogged filter makes the unit work harder and circulate dust through your home.
Window tracks and screens. Summer storms wash debris into window tracks, and insects leave residue on fly screens. Clean tracks with a stiff brush and vacuum, then wipe with a damp cloth. Screens can be removed and gently washed with warm water and mild detergent, then left to air dry before reinstalling.
Autumn-Specific Tasks
Gutter check. As deciduous trees shed leaves through autumn (yes, we have some on the Sunshine Coast), gutters can block quickly. Blocked gutters cause overflow that stains facades and can lead to water damage at roof junctions. If you can’t safely access your gutters, have them inspected and cleared before the May-June rain period.
Outdoor furniture deep clean. If you haven’t already moved outdoor furniture under cover or cleaned it after summer, now’s the time. Salt spray, sunscreen residue, and weathering create buildup that’s easier to remove now than after it’s baked on through another season. Teak and timber furniture benefits from a wash with mild soapy water, while aluminium and synthetic wicker can handle slightly more vigorous cleaning.
Carpet and rug refresh. With less humidity in autumn, it’s a good time for carpet deep cleaning. Carpets and rugs cleaned in high humidity take longer to dry and risk mould development underneath. The drier autumn air means faster drying times and better results. We recommend professional steam cleaning at least annually, and autumn is the ideal timing for Sunshine Coast homes.
Mattress rotation and clean. Strip beds completely, vacuum mattresses (including sides and underneath), and leave them to air in a well-ventilated room. Summer sweat and humidity contribute to dust mite populations that peak in warm, humid conditions. A thorough airing combined with a light spray of eucalyptus oil solution helps reduce mite populations going into the cooler months.
The Dust Shift
One of the biggest changes we notice between summer and autumn on the Sunshine Coast is dust behaviour. Summer’s regular afternoon storms knock dust out of the air and keep outdoor surfaces relatively clean. Autumn’s drier conditions mean more dust circulating and settling indoors.
If you’ve been getting away with less frequent dusting through summer, expect to increase frequency through autumn. Hard floors show dust more quickly, and light-coloured surfaces like white window sills and shelving units need more regular attention.
A good quality microfibre cloth—dry for dusting, damp for harder surfaces—is the single most effective cleaning tool for managing seasonal dust. Avoid feather dusters, which mostly redistribute dust rather than capturing it.
Outdoor Areas
Sunshine Coast outdoor living areas need different attention as seasons change.
Decks and patios. Summer’s UV exposure can fade and dry timber decks. Autumn is a good time to assess whether your deck needs oiling or sealing before winter rains arrive. Clean the surface thoroughly first—a stiff broom and hose will handle most buildup, but heavily soiled areas may need a scrub with an eco-friendly deck cleaner.
BBQ deep clean. If your barbecue’s been getting heavy use through summer, give it a thorough clean before usage drops in cooler months. Remove grill plates and soak in warm soapy water. Clean the drip tray. Check gas connections if applicable. A clean BBQ is more hygienic and performs better when you do fire it up on those pleasant autumn evenings.
Garden beds near the house. Overgrown garden beds against house walls trap moisture and provide pathways for insects. Trim back plants that are touching exterior walls and clear any leaf litter accumulation against foundations. This is a cleaning task that doubles as pest prevention.
Creating an Autumn Routine
Rather than treating autumn cleaning as a one-off event, consider establishing a routine that accounts for the seasonal shift:
- Weekly: Dust all surfaces, vacuum/mop floors, clean bathrooms, wipe kitchen surfaces
- Fortnightly: Window and glass cleaning (interior), ceiling fan wipe-down, outdoor furniture wipe
- Monthly: Deep clean one room (rotating), oven clean, window tracks and screens, fridge clean-out
- Once in autumn: Carpet deep clean, gutter check, outdoor furniture deep clean, mattress service
For many of our Sunshine Coast clients, the autumn season change is when they reassess whether they need professional cleaning support. If maintaining the house through summer has been manageable but autumn’s different demands tip the balance, a regular professional clean—even fortnightly—can keep on top of seasonal changes without it becoming overwhelming.
The Sunshine Coast doesn’t get harsh winters, but the transition from summer to autumn is a genuine shift in how your home behaves. A little attention now saves effort later and keeps your home comfortable through the cooler months ahead.
