Autumn Storm Preparation for Sunshine Coast Homes
Autumn on the Sunshine Coast is the deceptive season. Days look mild, the humidity drops a bit, and the worst of summer’s wind and rain feels behind you. Then April and May deliver the storms that catch out anyone who didn’t prep their property properly.
We’re a Maroochydore-based cleaning team and we see the same patterns every year. The houses that came through the wet season cleanly are the ones that did some work in autumn. The ones that come to us in May with mould creeping up the walls usually skipped a few basic steps.
Gutters are the obvious one. Coastal gutters fill faster than inland gutters because of salt-laden debris and the kind of windborne grit you don’t get further west. Clear them in late April. If you can’t access them safely, get someone in. The cost is small compared to a roof leak or a clogged downpipe failing in a 200mm rain event.
The second issue is window and door seals. UV and salt break down rubber seals faster on the coast than most people expect. Walk around your house with a notebook and check every seal. Replace anything cracking before the rain finds it.
The third is mould prevention. Sunshine Coast homes are mould-prone year-round, but autumn is when last summer’s mould spores meet new dampness and bloom. A bleach-based wash on bathroom and laundry walls before the wet sets in is the cheapest insurance there is. For larger homes or rentals, a professional clean now saves a far worse one in spring.
Decks, pergolas, and outdoor furniture also benefit from a deep clean before they sit through three months of damp. The salt residue and pollen from spring storms hardens into something far more difficult to remove if it’s left until July.
The bond cleaning side of our business sees a noticeable spike from May onwards as tenants discover their property failed inspection because of mould issues that started in March. The pattern is consistent enough that we plan our staffing around it.
For homeowners on the Sunshine Coast wanting to get ahead of the season, the basic checklist is gutters, seals, indoor mould-prone areas, and exterior surfaces. None of it is glamorous. All of it pays back.
